Becoming - Part One
"I really think you could become a great salesman....but I think it's pretty obvious to everyone else that you'd rather be a cartoonist. You don't really seem that interested in learning about office furniture. Why are you even here?" - I don't know if anyone had ever been that forthright with me before. There I was sitting in an empty restaurant across from a guy that hired me a mere six months ago to grow his high end office furniture business and now he was telling me that he was going to cut my draw in half and then do away with it completely. Then he smiled and said, "besides what you really want to do is draw full time." "Go home this weekend and think it over. If you're ready to give up this pipe dream (of becoming a cartoonist) then let me know and I will work with you so that you can gain some much needed focus. And then we can move forward to improving your chances of making a decent living in this industry. A really good salesman can make six figures a year if he is willing to hustle." It's easy to wake up in the morning and get out of bed if you're passionate about what you do. And if you're not passionate about what you do, you will try and convince other people (and yourself) that you can replace said passion with some "other work" simply because it "pays well". But what happens when the economy suddenly tanks and "nothing" really seems to be "paying well" anymore? Well, if you're me.....you get a second chance....and you give all the Glory to God. Always. But what if God wants you to do something else first?
